The Subo Experience

Last night, I had the pleasure of eating at Minneapolis’ new Filipino restaurant, Subo. It’s been open for about 6 weeks, but this is the first we’ve been able to get there to try it, and we were not disappointed.

I’d heard plenty of reviews on it, both from the impressed and the non-impressed, so I took the “I’ll believe it when I see it” approach on this one.

Subo reminded me somewhat of Solera, in which the food is served tapas-style, only with Filipino fusion food. Among the many things we tried; Adobo Chicken Wings, Roasted “Pork Candy” (It’s way better than it sounds, people), Grilled Shrimp, Baby Back Ribs, Bistek (holy deliciousness), Adobo Green Beans (you can never have too much Adobo), Seared Scallops, Vegetable Fried Rice, Long Grain White Rice, and for dessert — Beignets with Lemon Curd, and Thai Chili Chocolate Panna Cotta. Everything was amazing. Not the same Filipino cuisine my mother in law makes, but still delish. Even my five year old loved the panna cotta and that was pretty spicy!

One note of caution; if you’re looking for VERY traditional Filipino cooking, you may be left feeling someone dissatisfied. While many traditional dishes are available: lechon, adobo, rice, pancit, etc …. there are many missing: lumpia, torta, kare kare, and “black soup” (and for the majority of you readers who likely don’t know what that is, you may be glad it’s not on the menu). Think of Subo as more of a Filipino inspired fine dining experience, and not typical of home cooked Filipino foods.

Anyway, our server was friendly and welcoming, the kitchen is open so you can watch the magic happening, and the environment and decor of the restaurant was traditional with a modern twist.

I will definitely be going back!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

So, I won something! I find this incredibly cool. I’ve answered Twitter users’ quizzes, called into radio stations, and filled out my name and address on numerous slips of paper at establishments in hopes of winning something. And today, I finally did! I entered a contest on one of my favorite blogs; Eat Drink Pretty, in which the entry was to be a paragraph about a certain product from one of the sponsor websites and why you’d love to add it to your kitchen or dining room collection.

My entry:

Heidi M. said…

I love the American Heritage Alexa Bar Stool (http://www.diningroomsdirect.com/American-Heritage-130713SI-M01-AHB1000.html) from diningroomsdirect.com! It’s sleek and classy and far superior to the old outdated wooden bars stools we currently have in our kitchen. We’ve been meaning to upgrade, but since we’re both laid off right now, it’s just not in the budget. But as soon as we have extra money, that’ll be one of the first things to change in our house! They’d look so cool in our chrome accented kitchen!

-Heidi

And, lucky me – my entry was chosen at random as the winner of the contest!

Here’s what I won:

Artland Veritas Champagne Glass (Set of 4)

Isn’t it gorgeous? What a beautiful set, I’m totally excited! I already know where the glasses will be going in my kitchen, I have the perfect spot! And I am definitely going to have to find a reason to have a fancy dinner for four very very soon, just so I can use these! Not that a random mimosa a day would kill me, right?

HUGE thank you to Jenna of Eat Drink Pretty, and the two contest sponsors; (www.diningroomsdirect.com and www.cookware.com/). You made my day!

¡Salud!

First Class.

Tonight, I had the pleasure of flying first class to my short trip to Florida. I’d never done it before. When I arrived at MSP, I was prompted during my check-in on the American Airlines kiosk, that an upgrade was available for $50. I stared at the screen for a minute, wondering if I should do it, and ultimately decided to go for it.

I spent the pre-boarding time at the gate, wondering if I would stick out like a sore thumb in that class. Some of the people standing around waiting to board were in suits and shiny shoes and had Bluetooth devices stuck in their ears. I had my hair in a messy ponytail, was wearing a Green Bay Packers sweatshirt and jeans, and had a bright orange backpack on my back. Stand out? Me? Nooooo.

When the desk attendant announced that they would now board the First Class passengers, I felt so awkward! I took my seat and immediately noticed the difference in comfort level. It was roomy and plushy and really comfy. After all of the passengers had boarded, the flight attendant came around to ask if I cared for a pre-flight beverage. Pre-flight beverage? I had never heard of such a thing. When the attendant listed off the beverages, I took special note when she said “wine”. So, I asked for that. White. Sweet. Felt like I was at a bar!

And yeah, that uber cool area where my drink is resting? Huge. And oh so convenient. And the area to the left where the photo ends, is the armrest. Big enough for two. Wowsa.

And this thingy was cool too. A mini tray that pulled out. Not sure what it was for, but I took its picture anyway. You’re welcome.

Now, let’s talk leg room. There was lots.

Knees not touching the back of the seat.

View from down by my knees. You can SEE the dude in the row across from me!

Moving on…

My beverage that was served once the plane was airborne. Diet Coke, in a real glass. Like a glass glass.

And I’d heard about this and can now confirm its accuracy….. the hot towel. I gotz one. And it was hot. And hawt.

Mixed nuts. Served in a cute porcelain dish, and they were warm!

And the best part: Dinner.

Ricotta tortellini, caesar salad, bread, cheesecake and more wine. Loved it. It was delicious and well worth the upgrade just for that, because once I knew that there would be little to no time in between my connecting flights to my destination, so there would definitely be no time to eat. So this meal was perfect.

All in all, I give the experience two thumbs up. I’d definitely do it again, if the price was right. We’re already looking into the probability that we’ll be flying first class to Chile in December, so definitely time to save the pennies (and AAdvantage miles!)

Blogging from the Sky.

Who would have thunk it?

This is my first experience with this new technology and I gotta say — I’m a fan. It’s pretty slick and provides a rapid and steady connection, and was super easy to log onto. And at $10 per day, well worth it if it means I am entertained for the entire 2 hours and 10 minutes of this flight (Dallas-Ft. Worth to Fort Lauderdale).

So, I’ve tweeted, Facebooked and now am blogging from 33,000 feet. I think that’s pretty wicked. Almost as wicked as flying first class earlier today on the first leg of this journey. But I digress…..

Thanks, American Airlines!

Butter Balls.

I can hardly believe this.

Deep Fried Butter Balls

Either Paula Deen is running out of recipes, or she is trying to give the world a coronary. I would *love* to see the Nutrition Information for this recipe.

Ok, I admit it. That made me laugh. Hence why I thought it to be semi-blogworthy.

Evaluation.

Yesterday we had a physical therapist and a developmental specialist out to evaluate Caden’s delay in hitting milestones. It’s not like we were really that worried about it, but the doctor told us that it was a free service through our school district, so really, there was no reason not to.

The physical therapist scored Caden on what he could do and could not do, in many categories; feeding, mobility, attention, hearing, seeing, motor skills, etc. Out of a total of 100 points, Caden scored a 38. And 68 is the cut-off where your kid is developing at a “normal” rate.

Again, we’re still not worried…. the consensus from the two women was that Caden was just content rolling instead of crawling, and laying instead of sitting, and eating smooth jarred baby food instead of picking up solids. Basically, he’s just fine doing what he’s doing and doesn’t care to do those new things.

The physical therapist gave us some tips on how to encourage Caden to use his muscles to move forward in a crawling motion instead of rolling. She also told us that sitting with him in our laps and in his Bumbo will help strengthen his muscles in his back and tush so that he can start to sit up better by himself instead of flopping over. And also having him stand in our laps or on the ground with our help, will do the same — make those muscles stronger.

But, since he scored so low in the evaluation, he is going to continue with those services. We’ll be having a home nurse come out every couple of weeks to see where he’s at, and just be our support system while we try to get Caden to warm up to the idea of being a big boy, and helping us learn how to be active in getting him interested in those things.

They also encouraged us to get into some ECFE classes since Caden isn’t often exposed to other babies. They think that maybe since he’s home with mom and dad all day long and not around other kids his age, that maybe he would pick up on a few things if he were to be put into a group setting.

Other than that, he’s just fine! Just my stubborn little man! :)

It’s been really frustrating but I know he’ll come around and by the time that kid is walking around, we’ll be wishing he’d just sit still :)

In other news, Caden is outgrowing the infant seat. His head is nearing the “limit” of approaching 1″ to the top. Plus, he’s just getting darn heavy to carry around in the seat. And now that he’s getting better at sitting up with help, we might be able to get away with moving him to a convertible seat.
